Research group leads: Dr Nathan Broomhead, Dr Matthew Craven, Dr Julian Stander, and Dr B. King

The MCS cluster conducts research in areas ranging from pure and applied mathematics, statistics, machine learning and AI, to theoretical physics, including quantum computing and nuclear and particle physics.

MCS’s research is interdisciplinary, and underpins efforts to tackle real-world problems like disease epidemiology or sustainable energy production as well as fundamental questions such as the origins of the Higgs boson, particle physics in strong electromagnetic fields, or the mathematical and geometrical foundations of data science.

MCS’s research supports major international experiments at CERN, Fermilab, DESY, the European XFEL and the UK's Central Laser Facility. Members of MCS provide considerable technical expertise and leadership to the HPC infrastructure, supporting research efforts across the University of Plymouth.
