Overview
Organisation profile
Professor Jos Latour is leading the ICARE-LIFE research group. This group is a national and international research collaboration focusing on improving outcomes of patients and families in adult, paediatric and neonatal intensive care and emergency settings. The group's research themes address human-centred partnership, and the development of patient and family‑reported outcome measures.
Researchers of the ICARE-LIFE research group are leading influential international studies and consensus projects on core outcome sets. Professor Latour is the developer of the EMPATHIC, EMPATHC-N, EMPATHIC-30, and ENMPATIC-F questionnaires measuring parent and family satisfaction in neonatal, paediatric, and adult intensive care settings. These questionnaires have been translated and validated in more than 40 countries. The PREM-ED 65+, a validated patient-reported experience measure, has been developed specifically for adults aged 65 and older attending emergency departments.
Methodologically, the ICARE-LIFE covers clinical trials, large‑scale surveys, qualitative and mixed‑methods studies and includes more than 10 PhD students. Professor Latour is the deputy-chair of the COST Action programme, CA24107, Patient SAFety Related Outcome Measures in European ICUs (SAFE-ICU). This European research network, with over 220 members, aims to improve patient safety in intensive care by preventing and reducing the incidence of pressure ulcers, healthcare-associated infections, and delirium.
Future priorities and goals of the ICARE-LIFE group include advancing humanisation of intensive care (including staff wellbeing and equity), strengthening family‑centred and outcomes‑focused models of care across the lifespan, and building capacity in clinical nursing research through global partnerships, editorial leadership and mentorship of the next generation of clinician‑academic healthcare professionals.
