Overview

Organisation profile

Research Group Leads: Professor Nathan Clarke and Professor Bogdan Ghita

The multidisciplinary Cyber Security, Communications and Network (CSCAN) Research Group is focused on advancing the theory, technology, and practice of secure and resilient digital systems. Based within the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at the University of Plymouth, CSCAN brings together researchers, industry partners, and public-sector organisations to address contemporary challenges in cyber security, digital forensics, communications, and networked infrastructures.

CSCAN’s research spans a broad range of areas, including cyber threat detection and mitigation, digital evidence acquisition and analysis, human aspects of cyber security, secure communications, artificial intelligence in security applications, and the resilience of critical infrastructures. A particular emphasis is placed on bridging the gap between fundamental research and real-world deployment, ensuring that solutions are not only technically robust but also operationally practical and aligned with legal, ethical, and organisational requirements.

The group maintains strong links with industry, law enforcement, and government agencies, supporting collaborative projects, knowledge transfer, and the development of tools and frameworks that address emerging threats. CSCAN is also actively engaged in national and international research initiatives, contributing to large-scale programmes and partnerships that aim to strengthen cyber resilience across sectors.

In addition to its research activities, CSCAN plays a significant role in education and capacity building. The group supports undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, doctoral training, and professional development, helping to prepare the next generation of cyber security specialists. Through its research, teaching, and partnerships, CSCAN seeks to enhance digital trust, improve security practice, and contribute to a safer and more resilient digital society.
