Organisation profile

Research group lead: Dr Amir Aly

Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (AIR) brings together interdisciplinary research across artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomy, and data-driven systems to address real-world challenges. The group’s research themes include trustworthy and explainable AI, intelligent autonomous systems, human-robot interaction, computer vision, multimodal machine learning, and AI-enabled decision support.

AIR draws on the University’s broader legacy in robotics and neural systems research, while shaping a renewed, outward-facing profile in contemporary AI and robotics across computing, engineering, autonomy, and applied intelligent systems.

The group supports research in areas including healthcare and wellbeing, assistive, social, and cognitive robotics, autonomous and marine systems, environmental monitoring, agricultural robotics, cyber-resilient intelligent systems, and the safe and responsible deployment of AI in society. Its priorities are to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, support researcher development, and grow external partnerships and funding.

Through research that combines technical depth with practical relevance, AIR aims to increase visibility, support impactful innovation, and contribute to the School’s wider strategic research goals.
