Description

The Adolescent Preferences for Health Care and Self-Management Q-Sort (Jedeloo et al., 2010) was developed within the context of a study of preferences for self-management and hospital care of adolescents with chronic conditions. The Q-set contains 37 opinion statements on preferences for care delivery and self-management. The 37 opinion statements are rank-ordered using a score sheet ranging from 1 (least agree) to 7 (most agree). Respondents also provide motivations for their rankings. To obtain the Q-set, 104 opinion statements were derived from interviews and other sources. Thematic analysis identified 7 major themes. Each author independently assigned the statements to the 7 themes and made a selection. These selections were discussed until consensus was reached on a final Q-set consisting of 37 representative statements. The final Q-sort was administered to a purposive sample of adolescents (aged 12-19 years) with various chronic disorders. By-person factor analysis of the Q-sorts resulted in 4 distinct preference profiles: "Conscious & Compliant," "Backseat Patient," "Self-confident & Autonomous," and "Worried & Insecure."
