Description

DES is a Faculty Development initiative: an interdisciplinary medical school level, community of practice that provides an academic home for individuals whose careers have an education focus. The main objective of DES is to develop educational scholarship within the school. Activities include in house scholarship training in educational research methods, a mentorship programme, twice yearly educational half days and a competitive seed funding scheme. DES serves to support the development of individual staff profiles and career trajectories and plays a key role in assisting staff promotion. In addition DES enables a collaborative working ethic that feeds into the development of educational activities. Further DES bridges the link between educational practice and research, with many educators involved in significant work with the educational research unit 'CAMERA'. To date DES has supported or supports 25 staff members, all actively engaged in scholarship, research and knowledge transfer. DES therefore plays a key role in contributing to the external profile of the school.
