This talk provided learnings from material property and microstructural characterisation as proxies for Excavation Damage Zone investigation. It explored the extent to which similarities between UK rock properties and well-studied argillites, Opalinus Clay, in the more advanced Swiss GDF programme may be used to understand EDZ formation and evolution in the MMG. Alongside new laboratory tests on selected MMG and OPA samples, we compared material-specific rock properties e.g. porosity, particle size and morphology, mineralogy, and cement type with published datasets to examine key controls on fracture formation, possible mineral dissolution-precipitation, and swelling. The limited but integrated database is complemented by a more extensive review of the literature to strengthen the comparison and contextualise the findings.
