EDI in Tumultuous Times

Activity: Event organisation or participationOrganising a conference/congress (organisational committee role)

Description

In an era defined by economic instability, political turbulence, and the rise of authoritarianism, higher education institutions are facing profound challenges that are reshaping the academic landscape. These pressures are intensifying precarity across the sector—through casualisation, job insecurity, and unequal access to career progression—and raising urgent questions about the future of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
This British Academy-supported event, EDI in Tumultuous Times: Precarity, Power and Possibility in Higher Education, invites scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and activists to critically explore how precarity intersects with EDI efforts. Are current frameworks equipped to tackle deep-rooted structural inequalities? What new imaginaries and strategies are needed to foster truly inclusive academic environments?
The event aims to bring together British Academy Early Career Research Network members, British Academy Fellows, and experts in EDI to share and discuss current research, practice, and theory. It will provide a space for networking, mutual learning, and collective reflection on the challenges facing higher education institutions. Our goal is to identify actionable strategies to advance justice and equity, particularly for early career researchers navigating increasingly precarious academic environments.
