Hosted Professor Ann David, Professor of Dance and Cultural Engagement at University of Roehampton, London. Ann participated in a workshop on dance and anthropology and gave a talk "Dance, ritual and bodily practices in anthropology".
Abstract The fact that all human societies have some form of dance, or systemized movement system indicates the importance of movement in our lives. What about dance systems? Why are they significant to the study of anthropology and therefore the study of people? In this session, we will examine the extraordinary capacity for the human body to offer profound levels of intelligence and of cognition that have been somewhat overlooked in the Western understanding of mind/body. How does the production of knowledge from the body shape the way we think, and lead to new understandings about the agentive, lived experience of the body in dance/movement and ritual, and its primacy in revealing knowledge? How do we learn to hear and heed the voice of the body?
